As a person with a cornucopia of mental disorders, I do think we should try to eliminate most disabilities from the gene pool. Nobody should have to live like me. It's true that people with certain disabilities suffer mainly because of society, but society isn't good at changing for the better, and it would have to change quite a bit to give those people lives as good as neurotypicals'. Other disorders cause suffering independent of society: depression, anxiety, severe physical impairments. Nobody should have to live like me. Nobody should have to grow up like this. I honestly think it's unfair and even cruel to bring a person into existence if you know they're likely to have a harder time of it than most.

tl;dr: I approve of the movement to prevent people like me from being born. In most people's eyes, this makes me a terrible person, which is why I'm posting it in a confessions thread.

To some extent, I agree with this. I plan to never have a biological child unless someone finds a cure for my immune disorder.

Enh, I don't think anyone should have to be raised like me (our mental illnesses are pretty much entirely due to trauma), but I still see the problem as being the trauma, not us. And even though I suffer and have a rough go of it, I am glad to be alive and would be furious at anyone telling me that in a fair world, I never would've been born.

Getting rid of folks with our issues would just be getting rid of the symptoms, not the root problem. (Which is: you shouldn't rape your kids, and then THEIR kids, and get away with it.)

Now, if the PERPS in the family had never been born, that I might be into. But that's not possible. Chronic Assholism is not a disorder that can be diagnosed in utero.

Unfortunately most mental disorders and illnesses aren't genetic. Even those that do have a genetic component are usually highly influenced by environment, to the point where they are often entirely preventable.

This is why eugenics never worked in the past and it still doesn't work today except for a very select few disorders with an overwhelming genetic component (e.g. Down syndrome).

I'd be fine with a child who has something like Aspergers or ADD/ADHA, but if I ever screen for something worse...I think me and the boyfriend will have to maybe adopt.

Totally agreed, as a person with both mental and physical disorders. This is exactly why I'm never having children - inflicting the things I have (most of which are genetic) on a child would be cruel and selfish of me. My desire to have a child does not in any way trump that child's right to be born healthy.
