I live in Minneapolis! o/

People who have lived here and don't anymore always complain about winters here. Always. For me, it's part of who we are and what makes us strong.

We are assumed to be much like the people in Fargo... and some people here DO speak that way, but we have many different racial groups here as well.

I don't feel like "Minnesota Nice" is a thing that get's batted around as much as it used to, and there are definitely aspects of that that are true, but Minnesotans tend to stick to their kinds as well, and that makes it harder for people from elsewhere (or who just look like they are) to make friends.

Oddly enough, I moved from south Florida to Minneapolis several years ago and found it much easier to make friends. Keep in mind I definitely look like a non-native; I'm half Asian and tan really well. I think it's because I took my education very seriously, which is rare in Florida but better accepted here. I think there is some tribal behavior, but I'm seeing a bit more mixing.

The one thing I do find accurate about Minnesota Nice is its passive-aggressive nature. That's been the hardest thing for me to stomach, and I still find myself unleashing my inner New Yorker. Granted, I think about it more carefully before rolling down my window and swearing at some ridiculous motherfucker speeding along Hennepin Avenue, but I still occasionally say fuck in public at levels meant to be heard by others. I think once I get some company in that I'll feel totally at home.

That's another thing: we apparently can't drive.

I'd agree when it comes to merging, but for overall quality of driving/drivers nothing beats the shitaliciousness of Floridians.

I'm from Fargo! Well, right on the Minnesota side of it anyway.

I tend to assume the Minnesota stereotypes don't apply to people who live in "the cities". Once you get out of the urban area, people have stronger accents, say "uff-dah" (I sure do), and maybe the Minnesota Nice thing is more prevalent. I mean, for the most part, people are ridiculously friendly, have REALLY long good-byes (standing at the entryway for a half an hour talking before leaving really is a thing), and so on.

When I think of the cities though, I don't think of people there as having that kind of culture as much? I've never lived there so I can't say for sure, but the smaller city/town/rural vibe seem to me to really have that Scandinavian heritage (or if they don't directly, they still grow up in that culture and thus have the accent). Could just be my own personal experience though.

I've been to Milwaukee twice when I was a teenager And while I was mostly there for GenCon I thought the surrounding area was nice too, warmer than I was used to for summer though so that was a bit of a surprise.

Summer.

Kind of like a grungier but more polite version of Alberta. People were polite and friendly enough, had a definitely prairie drawl to them, but weren't as cowboy as some of the southern prairie states.

I only stayed there one day and I was right near the mall of America so I should feel like if I'd stayed more I might have a lot more to compare it to. One of my other friends described it kind of like a smaller piece of Canada migrated down to the USA lol.

I LIVE HERE ASK ME ANYTHING

I grew up around Minneapolis but currently live in the decidedly more rural southern bits. Since Altelierlune already covered the weather, I'll add that this is a really good state for if you like doing outdoorsy things--there are so many goddamn lakes, even in the middle of the Cities, and a pretty significant number of people do hiking, biking, and running, as well as the people who go up north for hunting or fishing.

There's also a surprisingly excellent arts scene, especially re: theatre and indie music.

I went there when I was 10, I think. It was in the summer for two weeks. I remember it being really hot and humid since most of the events we did were outdoors. I remember thinking that the highways in Minnesota were much bigger than the ones in Colorado, which is where I'm from. I also went to the Mall of America and thoroughly enjoying myself.

Do people from Minnesota love or hate Garrison Keillor? Or is it a little bit of both?

I've been! I went to visit my friend who lives in Minneapolis/St. Paul before driving over to Wisconsin for a wedding. It was a cool place! But I went in the summer, I sure as hell wouldn't try going there in the winter, ahahaha.

Another Minnesotan here! And no, I'm not from the cities - I'm originally from a smaller higher up.

Yay snow. And Minnesota Nice-ness.
