Watertown, NY

I once read a passage from an Army, LT in his memoirs, who trained in the 10th Mtn.

Apparently the year he went through training, one of the winter days had Watertown with the lowest temperature in the continental US (I remember that day, it was -40).

What he didn't realize was that the area is something of a geographic anomaly on earth. It's one of the few places that gets the most freakishly powerful snowstorms, and scientists from around the world come to study them. Within living memory, there've been a few snowstorms that dumped 8-11 ft of snow in a few days.

Somehow I've never heard that, despite growing up with Watertown being one of those sort of nearby places that's occasionally mentioned for one reason or another.

I have people in those parts who remember getting 13 feet of snow in '78.

YES! My mom and dad lived through the blizzard of '78 (tho I think it was 77?), and you could get several more feet of snow even if you were half a mile away, it was ridiculous.
