It sounds kind of callous to describe it like this, but most human relationships really do work on a cost-benefit analysis system.

Which is to say that if someone thinks the costs of keeping up interaction (ie. resources spent maintaining it) outweigh the benefits (resources they receive in return) they will stop trying to maintain it. People are always subconsciously weighing these things so if it starts to "feel" like someone is putting in less effort they just stop the interaction entirely.

With familial relationships it isn't quite like this, but if you're really hopeless with figuring out how it works, you can always just keep the rule in mind of equal give and take.
