Oh my god, this is so cringeworthy. My English is fairly good, and sometimes my ESL friends ask me to correct them, BUT I'M ALWAYS AFRAID I'LL DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

DA-- I had a character state something "baldly" once-- in the sense of speaking plainly or bluntly. (I could have just said "bluntly," but my usage was correct.) Someone posted and told me I meant "boldly, unless I meant the character's hair was falling out as he spoke." So I copied and pasted a definition in my response, explaining that no, the word I wrote was the word I chose and was correct. The reviewer explained that English was not their first language and their usage was shaky.

I let it go at that, but it did occur to me they would maybe have been smart to actually look up the word before correcting someone's use of it.

Ha. In high school I wrote an essay on Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra, and the teacher docked a point for my referring to Caesar as kindly, because everyone knows that 'kindly' is strictly an adverb. *headdesk*

I was trying to convey the avuncular/benevolent vibe that the word 'kindly' possesses - and, IMO, 'kind' doesn't quite - but obviously I was unsuccessful o_0

SA--as a former teacher, that's just embarrassing. And not for you!
