What about "non-violent offenders" like Bernie Madoff or Ken Lay? Or corrupt officials like Rod Blagojevich? Or church hierarchs and administrators who kept sending predator priests on to new parishes where they found new victims, because protecting the reputation of the Church was more important to them than protecting children? These people might not get their hands dirty by committing violent acts themselves, but they do a massive amount of harm--should they just get off with a slap on the wrist?

No. Same with, say, the CEO of a company that commits massive environmental damage, or ruins the lives of its workers, or a government that sends its troops into an unjust war. But the framework doesn't exist—as you point out—for conceiving of this as violent, even though it causes more harm than many of the acts we conceive of as violent.

There would seem to be more productive ways to deal with this than prison, though. Like, say, redistributing the personal and corporate wealth of the people and institutions involved so as to mitigate the harm done.

Like I said, there's a bit of me that's vengeful and would actually just like to see these people strung from lamp posts, but I try to curb my own more violent instincts. :)

I'll freely admit that if it were possible to develop a selective serotonin reuptake agonist, I would wish life imprisonment with untreated depression on the likes of Bernie Madoff or Anthony Bevilacqua...

Hah, yes. Or having to collect food stamps and living hand-to-mouth in a place with bedbugs.
