I agree that probably had a lot to do with it. I kept checking sf_d long after I should have stopped and the posts about tumblr that popped up later seemed harder to follow. Instead of linking to a post with all the comments underneath, there'd be a post and then here's a new link to a later part of the argument because it all the reblogs inside reblogs get hard to read, oh and there's some funny replies but you have to dig through 150 "____ liked this post" in order to see them.

That and fandom culture has moved away from "Look at this! Isn't it funny?" and toward "Look at this! Isn't it terrible?" Spreading these things around is less like sharing a joke and more like PSAs about people to avoid. Which goes back to what hwc said about "PCness" but I think people like MRAs can be basically the same about being motivated by a sense of righteousness rather than the lulz.
