I think it's only polite to at least make a sincere attempt at learning the basics of the primary language, and how to avoid saying and doing things that will be perceived as outrageously rude by the locals.

That said, I think it's also necessary to allow for the fact that learning new languages and customs isn't easy, will take time, and may genuinely be unreasonable to expect of some people (I really wouldn't demand that an 80-year-old grandma who came over to the U.S. with her family learn much English, for example. Though if she can, awesome! Go Grandma.)
