Re: Weirdest con crit you've ever gotten?

I live in a part of Canada that has ravens and crows, but no magpies. So our version of the rhyme goes "One crow, sorrow, two for joy..." and that's the way I've heard it from childhood.

Until this minute I had never heard of a version with magpies in it, although a little research tells me magpies were the original European version.

A few minutes' more research assures me that other corvids (ie crows and raven) are inserted into the rhyme in parts of North America that don't have magpies.

So, your concrit was wrong, but the person who received it probably laughed and told her friends, "Hey, did you know they also do this rhyme with magpies? And this reviewer couldn't be bothered to look up other versions of folks rhymes before telling me I was wrong!"

When dealing with nursery rhymes and folk stories, it's always best to check for alternate versions before you start correcting someone.

While I appreciate the new information, the irony is that no my concrit wasn't wrong. She was writing for a British fandom. If she'd done her research then she would have got it right. Though now the source of the mistake is more understandable.

There you go: both of you should have done more research on folk rhymes.
