I found him way too. . .dignified to be Howl. I definitely can't picture him as Howl in the sequels. (Although Sophie in the movie wasn't as scrappy and funny as book Sophie, either). And yeah, it would have been LOVELY to let him use his accent.

I'm glad I actually saw the movie before I read the book, although I seriously can't figure out why I didn't discover DWJ as a kid.
