The rapey female boss in the first movie creeped me out too much to make the movie enjoyable for me.

tw: rape

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's worse in the second movie, imo. She plays up the whole I'm a sex addict as an excuse for the previous rapes. And uses coercion again to try and force Day's character, and... ends up admitting to raping him while he was in a coma at the end.

Omg that's awful. It would've still bothered me, but if it had played off as not funny in the first movie, I could've enjoyed the movie more. I just kept getting that "she's hot so you should've liked being raped" vibe from the way it was written. Like, that's what I thought the audience was supposed to be getting out of it-- it was part of the joke.

Yeah, I really wished they hadn't done the whole "but she's so HOT" thing. I think maybe the first movie, that was supposed to be the joke - that the others are confused and pressure Day's character, but... I wonder, maybe the audience as a larger whole didn't get it, because of where they took it in the second movie. :-\ Or the writers just think a female predator/rapist is funny in general, as even at the end -- Charlie Day's character, his wife forgives her at the end and it's a huge joke that the wife and Aniston's character are sleeping together.

Can we not keep calling it rape? please?

Considering that Dale himself calls it rape, I don't see the objection.

How on earth is having sex with someone while they're in a coma not rape?

Re: tw: rape

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
How is what she did not rape? In the first movie, besides the use of coercion and blackmail, she assaults him while he's under the effects of anesthesia and can't consent. In the second movie, there's coercion and blackmail again, and again, happens when he can't consent.

Where I live, rape is considered a hate crime against women, so depending on where OP lives that might explain it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that makes sense, thank you.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense in terms of it being a legal definition, maybe.

That is so fucking bizarre.

By that reasoning, raping me would be a hate crime... right up until I transitioned at which point it becomes... what? An unfortunate accident?

Man, that's fucking creepy.

That really puts it in perspective.

Like, don't get me wrong, rape can totally be a hate crime, but acting like that's the ONLY thing it can be just seems another excuse to tell rape victims, "Nuh UH! You couldn't have been raped, because [bullshit]!"

And not just the hate crime aspect, but -- even moreso -- the 'women only' aspect.

that's ridiculous

Re: tw: rape

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
that's really not good. What if a woman rapes another woman?

Re: tw: rape

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's considered hate crime against women, not specifically a hate crime by men. women can rape other women, but women cannot rape men.

Re: tw: rape

(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's good, but it's really bad to have it be law that women can't rape men. It's bad for men, but it's also bad for women, because of the idea that women can only be passive when it comes to sexual interactions between men and women.

No we'll keep calling it that because that's what it is. I don't care what bullshit definitions people come up with for it, it's still rape.

The fact that you're so offended by the idea means you have some serious issues.

how the fuck did this movie even get a sequel? it basically invalidates the ending of the first. some movies close the story on movie one and that's fine. I blame hollywood.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I found that really offensive.

I was okay with it in the first movie because Dale's reactions were totally believable. Even if it was funny to some extent, his horror at being raped kept it a black comedy sort of funny. It sounds like the second movie took away from that, though?

This might be suited to its own thread, but I'm okay with rape jokes as part of a generally fucked-up comedy. For instance, Blame It On the Bellboy gets away with humor in the onscreen rape of a likeable female character, because it's a movie where a lot of the humor is really dark and uncomfortable. (And because she ruins the rapist's life afterwards, but that's neither here nor there.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely enjoyed the first movie because of Dale's reactions and how it seemed to be portrayed, to me, as very uncomfortable and upsetting, and Dale showed constant frustration with his idiot friends when they kept making fun of him for it. But then the second... yeah. At least they kept Dale's reactions consistent.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-31 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because of how the film overall portrays it. In the first one it was seen as rape and his friends were dicks for not seeing it. But in the second on it was like it wasn't rape and he was overreacting. To the same clearly thing that was clearly rape.
