A brief rant on American politics

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-01-31 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2015/jan/30/ted-cruz/ted-cruz-says-top-1-percent-earn-more-national-inc/

[Senator Ted] Cruz said the country’s rich and powerful "have gotten fat and happy" on Obama’s watch. "Today the top 1 percent earn a higher share of our national income than any year since 1928," Cruz said . . .

By email, Cruz spokesman Phil Novack indicated Cruz does not agree with Obama, who said in his speech he wants to reduce the top 1 percent’s after-tax income. Novack said Cruz, rather than increase taxes on the wealthy, believes the only way to "jumpstart the economy is by championing pro-growth policies like energy development and a flatter, simpler tax structure."

Complete contradiction, or certainty that his constituents don't know what a flat tax is?

He's Republican. They don't raise taxes on the rich no matter what. Seriously, NO. MATTER. WHAT.

So they might say, "Well, the rich had gotten richer under Obama." To which you would respond, "In that case, can we raise the taxes on them?" To which they will go, "No, no, no, no, we can't do that. We'll never do that." Even if they just said something that would suggest raising taxes.

It's either a complete contradiction,* or he doesn't understand capitalism.

And he understands capitalism, Ted Cruz is an intelligent guy.

*I don't think this is even a particularly partisan point: to the extent that believers in free markets are framing this as a conversation about income inequality, there's just no way to justify that. Because by the nature of capitalism, any successful business is going to make a profit, and businesses are only going to give raises or hire people if it's economically rational for them to do so, IE, if it makes them more money. It's one thing for a believer in the efficacy of free markets to talk about eliminating poverty; I strongly disagree with the idea that it's capable of doing so, but I accept that there's an argument there. But talking about free markets as reducing income inequality just seems fundamentally impossible.

I hate it when republicans blame shit on Obama that are there own fault. Or thing that they honestly wouldn't change.

Most non-rich Republicans are poor people who will remain poor for the rest of their lives, but are too stupid to realize that "protecting" the rich doesn't mean that they're ever going to get rich themselves.

A rant about budget cuts because I want to

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2015-01-31 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
People that champion a flat tax as a more equitable tax rate don't understand the economics of being low-income.

People that champion a "simpler tax structure" are usually saying they want to eliminate and/or defund the IRS as part of their bullshit "small, less intrusive government" politics. (Wouldn't want to fund an agency to collect money for infrastructure, but God forbid a women want agency over her own body.) They've already severely underfunded the IRS during a crucial year. The year the agency is tasked in fully implementing the controversial and ever challenged Affordable Care Act, the IRS's budget is slashed so severely that Americans, largely uneducated on the scope of this law which effects every single tax return filed, have almost no where to turn to get help except for paid preparers. Taxpayer Assistant offices (already understaffed) are not preparing returns this year and real live customer service will be limited and/or not available. Americans unfamiliar with or unable to access self-help options (like IRS.gov) are going to have a difficult time this year. All the while, I'm sure, Obama will be blamed for the limitations and difficulties imposed by the Republican controlled Congress.

Anyway, the GOP is a collective piece of shit who like to fuck shit up and then blame others. The Bush Tax Cuts and the continuation of them ( passed only because whiny Republicans wouldn't pass a budget otherwise) contributed greatly to the US's income gap.

certainty that his constituents don't know what a flat tax is

This one, right here.

Or, at least the portion who'll be screwed over by it. The (more important to him) portion that will benifit, he certainly hopes understand the implications.

It's also possible he doesn't understand it, but I can't imagine anyone who's that stupid could possibly get to the point where they'd benefit from it.
