I think it kinda demonstrates that a lot of slash is about a certain kind of fetish. Put a gay character into the canon, and suddenly it's not fun anymore.

That's quite the jump to make, and I'm not following it. I'd say it says more about the interests of the (female, generally) gamers who play Dragon Age. Especially given the option to create an avatar, which often players will have align with their own genders and basically live through them. Since most of them are also probably straight, they are probably writing stories from their experiences with the game, which basically promotes a self-insert type immersion and thus ends up being heterosexual.

I mean, I specifically created a male Hawke for Dragon Age 2 so I could romance Fenris. If that hadn't been a factor, I would've played female Hawke too.

I'm hoping fandom will have a healthy amount of Iron Bull/Dorian, as it doesn't involve the player's avatar. I remember there being quite a bit of Anders/Fenris for DA2, and that one took a helluva lot of justification, but it's nice to get away from romances that the player's character isn't involved.

Lol no. There's quite a lot of slash involving canon gay and bi characters in many fandoms. This is more an exception than the rule.

I dont think this is true. Ive been in fandoms where the canon gay ones are the most popular, and one where once the gay characters love interest became a thing the other pairings shipping him with the straight characters all but died off.

There is tons of MHawke/Anders (or Fenris) and hell even Fenris/Anders fic wise. And now with DA:I Im seeing all sorts of Dorian pairings and the like

tell that to the rabid klaine fans...

"Certain kind of fetish" - what, het's not?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Is having a sexual orientation a fetish now?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Het fic, not heterosexuality.

right. that's why there's no dorian slash, and that's why the da2 fandom doesn't ship anders/fenris for some inexplicable reason. oh, wait.
