So what exactly is a songfic?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Is it the type of fic where the author quotes the lyrics of a song in the introduction? Where they use the title of a song for the name of the chapter/a song inspires a particular chapter or story?

Or is it the type of fic where people are going to quote song lyrics as part of actual dialogue? OR even worse, one of the characters is singing a song and they are more than amazing at it (thereby wooing their love interest/proving how talented they are, etc.)?

I think typically, it's the kind of fic where the prose is repeatedly interrupted for copy/pasted lyrics. Like, where the author inserts a verse of the song every few paragraphs. [personal profile] asecretchord linked to a tastefully done example upthread.

Sometimes it's a fic where one of the characters is singing the song in question, but I rather think that the singing scene would have to be the main or even sole focus of the fic in order to qualify.

I don't think that most people consider fics with lyric titles to be songfics. Fics that just quote a bit at the beginning also aren't typically considered to be songfics.

For me song fic is when the author inserts the lyrics into the fic, usually in italics. Not just a few lines, the whole song. Its usually when a character is being completely OOC and is singing for some weird reason. For example, in STVoyager fic, Janeway has a hidden talent and on talent night she sings a love song for Chakotay. Or in Castle fic where Kate Beckett goes to Karaoke Night and sings a love song to Castle. *massive eye roll*

I usually just scroll past the lyrics or close the fic. I think I would do that even if I did like the sappy romantic songs that are always used.

I feel this way about fan vids too. No one ever uses songs I actually like. Its always some wishy washy lovey dovey celine dion type of song. Blergh.
