(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)And where do you draw the line? What classes of people get protected? What classes of people don't? I've seen absolutely vile hate speech directed at straight white men, for example, simply on the basis that they are straight, white, and male--not to mention what gets hurled at conservative women of color. I'm not sure that's a path we want to go down.

As for drawing the line, I don't claim to have an answer. I'm generally in favor of judging things on a case by case basis. But a big part of the argument against hate speech involves an incitement to violence, which is illegal. So I suppose the argument is that straight white men are incited to violence against other groups more often than the other way around. I don't know. I'm against generalizations about any group.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-01 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, I'm for free speech too, but even as it exists it does have limits, which are more reasonable than not.
