And this is what tumblr doesn't understand. Freedom of speech protects you hate, you don't agree with. Because hey, on the flipside, there are people who find your beliefs horrible, too. And once you start saying "You can't say this because I personally hate it" you open up the doors for the people who what what you think/say to do the same to you.

I don't understand why tumblr can't seem to grasp this.

It's not just people on tumblr who can't grasp it. It's actually a really hard concept for a lot of people, because it's tied up in all these really strong emotions. And a lot of people think "logic" means "arriving at a conclusion that makes you feel good."

Exactly.

You can't pick and choose what is allowed because you would have to say who has the right to choose?

I'd hazard a guess that most of the people who don't get it are young and/or lack experience and education to have thought the issue through. Things can seem very black and white when you're a teenager, but that's mostly because teens don't always appreciate real world complexities enough to realize that there's rarely a solid right vs. wrong divide in any given issue.

Actually, it occurred to me that for these teenagers, 9/11 happened when they were like two. Basically their whole lives, they've lived in a world where people use the word "rights" with contempt. When I was a kid, the right of the American Nazi Party and their ilk to demonstrate publicly was held up as a point of pride, proof that America would stand up for its ideals even when it was difficult. I guess that's not really a thing any more.

Anti hate-speech laws are not "you can't say this because I personally hate it", it's "you can't say this because your speech amounts to threats and libel against this group of people."

I know F!S is full of Americans, but it really strikes me that Americans all firmly assert "Freedom of Speech or bust!! You guys are all anti-freedom! I know my rights!!" when they are actually in the minority among developed nations when it comes to anti hate-speech laws.
