As a Jew and a proud American, I cannot with people who think neo-Nazis shouldn't be allowed to demonstrate. Taking away others' right to free speech on our behalf just makes things worse for us.

That's great for you. Personally if I found that the city I live in was allowing Neo-Nazis to hold a march there I'd feel incredibly scared and upset and likely would not feel anywhere near as safe living there ever again. Serious question: Are honest-to-God neo-nazis allowed to march in the streets for real in the States? Are you really allowed to, for example, march in public with signs about racial purity and/or swastikas and shout about exterminating the undesirables? Are there really no limits?

The village is not too far from my granparent's former home, so I heard about it from my uncle even before it made the news. It was glorious.

Uh, I don't like Neo-Nazis, but marching in itself isn't such a major threat. It's obnoxious, but not terribly efficacious.

I think it's better to let them march, get a feel for how many there are, and then work on changing minds.

Do people seriously feel safer NOT knowing who the Neo-Nazis are? Because I hate to break it to you, but Europe has just as many, if not more, Neo-Nazis than the United States.

Hell, I'd venture to say that Jews in the US are probably much safer than those in Europe by and large.

I just don't understand why the ability to march and express their views would make you feel less safe. They still EXIST, even if such marches are outlawed. And the marches, believe it or not, are not how they recruit new members.`

First message: [name redacted] asked: I find you amazing as a writer, (I don’t know you personally to say as a person) but supporting Neo-nazis in any way is antisemetic. I don’t care if you think it’s funny to let him march just to trick them into donating for something good. They’re still horrifying, antisemetic, homophobic and racist. If you support a group of people so vile then you need to rethink some things, idc what your intentions are.

Second message: [name redacted] asked: fan of your wring, but you would defend the right of neo-nazis to march?? well you’re a clown & glad I didn’t pay for any of your books. get spit on in public.

Secret text: I cant decide what I love more…

1) The fact that his fans are so dumb they don’t understand what it means to support free speech even for groups you disagree with

2) The fact that his fans are so dumb they don’t realize they’re lecturing a Jewish guy for being anti-semitic

And this is what tumblr doesn't understand. Freedom of speech protects you hate, you don't agree with. Because hey, on the flipside, there are people who find your beliefs horrible, too. And once you start saying "You can't say this because I personally hate it" you open up the doors for the people who what what you think/say to do the same to you.

I don't understand why tumblr can't seem to grasp this.

I think maybe they're just new/not fans at all. He's always been unequivocal re free speech and he's always spoken about being Jewish as well so neither of these things should be confusing to people.
