As a Jew and a proud American, I cannot with people who think neo-Nazis shouldn't be allowed to demonstrate. Taking away others' right to free speech on our behalf just makes things worse for us.

But I do reserve the right to stand right nearby and stare at them unblinkingly as they march, while mumbling Hebrew and watch them shit themselves in terror.

It's not often talked about, sadly, but it's hard for some of them to break free because it's like a cult.

I knew someone like this. He really tried and people kept treating him like shit. So eventually he got drawn back into an even more dangerous group.

Similar things have been done by people when the Westboro Baptist Church comes to town, setting up a table where people can pledge money for every minute the WBC stays to protest and it goes towards things that benefit groups the WBC hates (which is practically everybody). The longer the WBC protests, the more money the counter-group raises.

The only neo-Nazis* I met were rather aggressive and wouldn't be intimidated at all - when you're marching in the streets in big numbers, with flags and maybe some flares, you're really getting pumped and your confidence in your strength grows. The crowd gives you power. That's not really a situation in which you can get "unnerved" by somebody suspicious (you might, on the other hand, attack that suspicious person, you're feeling great and powerful atm, after all...)

Well, speaking generally I've found that when I try to get to the root of why Jews are A Special Kind of Evil, it usually comes down to "they must have ungodly powers!" I mean, once you clear past all the other shit they say. I mean how exactly are we, less than one percent of the global population, able to control the world and steal money from babies while we drink their blood or whatever? I mean even if enough of us could get along enough to be organized for that kind of scheming, we just don't have the numbers to wield that kind of power. And we all have to be able to wield that kind of power, because otherwise why hate the entire race? Why not just hate the specific Jews they think are conspiring?

My conclusion is that there's some kind of primal ancient belief about us as an unholy enclave that has persisted through blood libels and pogroms and whatnot for decades. Maybe the idea of a "Chosen People" is frightening. Maybe the fact that we've always had such a high literacy level means we have access to ancient evil texts. Maybe it is something about the fact that we killed Jesus Christ (which no, that was the Romans, we just turned him over to them), Son of God, how is that even possible? Maybe we know something others don't, and that makes us evil? There's no rational explanation for what makes us such a threat as a race. So..,Evil Jew Powers, is the only answer.

So my theory is that if someone believes Jews are so powerful, I can use that to my advantage. If you really think that Jews have unholy secrets, and then see one staring at you and mumbling a curse in Hebrew, that should be pretty scary. And frankly, I'm not completely sure I lack that kind of power. The Kennedy Curse? That was us.

That's great for you. Personally if I found that the city I live in was allowing Neo-Nazis to hold a march there I'd feel incredibly scared and upset and likely would not feel anywhere near as safe living there ever again. I certainly wouldn't dare go anywhere near people who literally support my murder.

Eh, I don't think anyone in my family has ever lived free of people who wanted them dead just for being Jewish. It's kind of a Jewish fact of life, knowing there are those that wish the worst on you out there, even though in many places (especially the liberal parts of the US) it seems hidden. You can go around in fear all your life or you can harness the Evil Eye and set a curse on your enemies.

Serious question: Are honest-to-God neo-nazis allowed to march in the streets for real in the States? Are you really allowed to, for example, march in public with signs about racial purity and/or swastikas and shout about exterminating the undesirables? Are there really no limits?

As long as you get a parade permit, yes.

Counter-demonstrators are also allowed. Usually the counter-demonstration is larger by several orders of magnitude.

In theory, yeah, there are a lot fewer limits. Obviously actually assaulting people is legally actionable.

Localities have tried to shut them down, but their have been lawsuits to overturn those laws. The principle is supposed to be that if anti-Semites and Nazis can march, than, say, anti-Scientology, Communist, and racial equality groups can too.

In practice, though, the white supremacists have their little march, behave themselves, and go home.

Then later a leftist demonstration, depending on the locality, will either be allowed to demonstrate and be just as ignored, or get accused of lawless behavior and be harassed violently by the police.

The federal government can't stop them. Freedom of Speech is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Local government can make them get a temporary event permit and they might have to get the police involved to keep the peace (I mean, my city had the cops double check the route of a marathon for charity. I'm sure that if some Nazis showed up, the cops would want to be informed).

I've yet to read about a neo-nazi or Klan march where the racists were not outnumbered at least 10 to 1, if not 100 one 1 by counter-protesters. Very little galvanizes black churches and jewish community groups like a racist march. At least in the states, these marches backfire to become a show of solidarity against racism.

And it's not the ones who march that you need to worry about.
