Daryl Hannah is still incredibly beautiful in that though.

I want to know what your part of the internet is.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I don't understand where OP has been going. Most people I come across think it's really hokey.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Are you in a mermaid enthusiast fandom or something?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
That fucking movie led to a decade and a half AT LEAST of fucking every girl being fucking named madison. Shit. I still get flashbacks. I think I quit teaching because of all the fucking madisons born in the late 90s when all those little kids grew up and had babies and fucking named them madison and I had 35 of them in one class.

No, I'm not capitalizing it. It doesn't deserve my respect.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
And Madison paved the way for Addison (thanks Gray's Anatomy, for making that one a thing).

And all the boys are Aidan, Brayden, Caden, Hayden, Jaden, Kayden, Payton, Slayden, etc. Not much better.

I have to admit, I dislike that name a lot. I dislike most of the generic unisex names that are popular nowadays. They sound so WASPy. But it's my niece's name, which makes me sad. :(

I'll never forgive this movie for giving the world the girl's name Madison. I fucking hate that name.

Then again, the writers probably had no idea parents would be stupid enough to use it, since it was supposed to be a joke about her not knowing anything about human names.

LOL! This movie is my childhood. I used to pretend I would turn into a mermaid if I got wet and told my parents I wanted to take a bath with the bathroom door shut so they wouldn't know my "secret". I even nicked salt from the shaker and dropped it in the water while the tub was filling up. If I went swimming, I kept my legs together and swam like a mermaid in the water and pretended nobody could see my fins unless I "let" them with my mind.

Thanks for bringing back some really fond memories! :) Now I really want to go watch this movie again for old time's sake.

I'm only aware of this movie because of how it caused people to start naming their daughters "Madison."

Although even in the movie, someone says "Madison isn't a name!"

I've never seen this movie. People think that highly of it?

Awww I loved this movie as a kiddo, but I agree. I saw it some time ago again and it looked so bad haha.

Wow, never knew so much hate for the name Madison existed! It's my best friend's niece's name, although they mostly call her Maddie.

Anyway, I haven't seen the movie in years but I have fond memories.

I really like this movie and have since I was a kid, but literally no one I talk to in RL knows what I'm talking about. I had no idea it was popular?

Everybody loves this movie, they grew up watching it, made them want to me a mermaid etc. etc.

Secret:
It really hasn’t aged well, in fact I think it’s pretty terrible. She’s only a mermaid for three scenes, the rest is New Yorkers yelling at each other.

This is blasphemy in my part of the internets.

The best thing that has happened to me today was reading this thread and finding out that I'm not the only person with a borderline irrational hatred for the name Madison.

I didn't remember her name was Madison until just now. And i've never met a single person in real life named Madison. So.

I liked this movie, though it was cute and sweet, and was glad he left with her to be a human under the sea instead of her giving up her tail and life as a mermaid.

Don't remember how old I was when I first saw this film, but must have been about 8-10... even then IIRC I was put off by the fact that the Tom Hanks character was such a total tool ("OMG what on earth does she see in him"). Something they tried, unsuccessfully, to disguise by having all the other male characters be even worse (he has a cousin or something who spends the film going around trying to look up women's skirts? IDK).

Even now I have a deep and abiding hatred for the trope where two characters fall in Twu Wuv as very young children, and can never be happy with anyone else even if they grow up apart and remain fixated on the idea of this person they knew when they were like 7 years old. Not that I really needed this film to put me off it - it has enough of an ick factor on its own - but this was probably the first time I encountered that trope! (typoed that as "tripe" first time round which is also accurate.)

tl;dr I'm amazed there are apparently people who think this is anything other than crap, even with nostalgia goggles on.

The best bit about this movie was how they managed to do the mermaid effects back in the days of no CGI. As a kid I could totally believe that was a mermaid. I remember talking about it with my friends and wondering how they did it.

It was all clever editing and props. Your mind filled in the rest. The scene where she turns into a mermaid in the bath is still beautiful for how little it actually shows, albeit with moodily lit cheesy 80s lighting.

I was just embarrassed at how lousy Daryl Hannah's acting was back then. (she was a LOT more talented by the time she was in Kill Bill!)
