Don't remember how old I was when I first saw this film, but must have been about 8-10... even then IIRC I was put off by the fact that the Tom Hanks character was such a total tool ("OMG what on earth does she see in him"). Something they tried, unsuccessfully, to disguise by having all the other male characters be even worse (he has a cousin or something who spends the film going around trying to look up women's skirts? IDK).

Even now I have a deep and abiding hatred for the trope where two characters fall in Twu Wuv as very young children, and can never be happy with anyone else even if they grow up apart and remain fixated on the idea of this person they knew when they were like 7 years old. Not that I really needed this film to put me off it - it has enough of an ick factor on its own - but this was probably the first time I encountered that trope! (typoed that as "tripe" first time round which is also accurate.)

tl;dr I'm amazed there are apparently people who think this is anything other than crap, even with nostalgia goggles on.
