I suppose you could interpret it like that, but honestly, I don't see how you can get away from the fact that it turns Legolas's motives for friendship with Gimli into a reflection of Tauriel. Tauriel turns Legolas into a particularly spiteful character, both by their interactions in the Hobbit, and what she means to Legolas and what she now suddenly represents for the elves in Lord of the Rings.

Honestly, I think Tauriel's arc was the worst way possible Jackson could have written a female elf in The Hobbit. Not to mention the actual writing of the dialogue itself, I still shudder at the memory of her cheesy as fuck dialogue at the end of the last movie...
