The continued love for both of them is why I stopped watching...

I had similar issues, not that I care that people love them but that the writers refused to ever move them forward or kill them off. Both Rumple and Regina were a constant back and forth between being fully evil or being "kind of" redeemed and it got tiring to see them get tied to EVERY fairy tale.

Rumple was my favorite in the beginning of the series because he was fun and I like the actor, but the show destroyed him (and related, I will never be happy with what the show did to Belle.)

As is often the case, the writers and producers are the worst villains of the show.
