Re: I gotta rant a little

Yeah, I know how you feel. It's fucking stupid and annoying as hell.

I wish people actually respected bisexuality but especially online, it seems like the people who are most vocal in their support of bisexuality are just repping it to prop up the plausibility of their non-canon pairings.

Re: I gotta rant a little

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that definitely seems to be the case. Bisexuality is a convenience to them instead of an actual orientation. And seeing that gets really, really frustrating after awhile.

DA:

Damn, I'm actually happy when people mention bisexuality as a shipping solution. That's better than most talk about it and what I see the most is people getting a character with straight canon and then writing them as having this one gay exception. Why not bi, writers? I wish more people wrote characters as bi in fandom.

Re: I gotta rant a little

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good point. I think it depends on how it's handled. I've seen a lot of people who treat bi as just being the Compromise Option that I saw today, which is the thing that's frustrating. To me, that's different from what it sounds like you're talking about, which is writing a character as bi in a way that treats it as legitimate.

Yes, you're right. I should have played closer attention, sorry.

Oh, no need to apologize! Like I said, it was a good point. :) And I'd definitely be happy to see more people writing characters as bi in a serious way.

:B I write it, anon! Is there something specific you're looking for? Because I got stories I could maybe throw at you...

Oh, um...I dunno! Are you talking about original stuff or fanfic stuff? With original stuff, I'll read just about anything.

This took a while for me to compile...

Original stuff. Hmm, okay, let's see...

I've got my slice-of-life vampire series, where Larry is bi, has a wife emeritus, shared custody of a little girl, and his husband Luis. (I wanted to write about someone getting turned as a vampire AFTER the age of thirty.) They're in Going Home and Mao Xue Wang.

In Infinity Smashed, a coming-of-age sci-fi series, both Thomas and Raige are bi, and later are in a poly relationship with M.D., who takes whatever pronouns you give her. Pretty much everything in Book Four is about it, and the series is rigged so you can jump in there if you want. Tons of stories on that, but you can test out on The Next Adventure and Folie a Trois if you like.

In the same series, Comboy Bob Doshii is a middle-aged bi computer hacker who ends up pairing up with his gun-toting partner. They're like the Men In Black with a crappier budget. Pretty much ALL the PIN Chronicles is about them.

In my brokeass superheroes series, T is bi and has the bad habit of crushing on people unavailable, and Mig mostly likes women but has a relationship with a retired shapeshifter who ignores gender. They're both in 5 Times BTU Flunked Gender.

And then a bunch of one-shots involving pirates, ghosts, and mercenaries, which are all listed in this post here.

(But yeah, I've got something like twenty stories here. Hopefully you find one you like! And I've got a writeathon going, so you can prompt for more!)

Thank you for sharing. It'll be slow going but I'll check them out! :)

No prob! Hope you find something that works for you.

(It has also made me sadly aware of how sadly lacking my bi girl characters are. For some reason, my female cast tends to slant ace. Fail, me.)

Re: I gotta rant a little

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
God, that pisses me off, too.

Not so much the mention that bisexuality can be an option, too, but when people start hardcore arguing that such-and-such character MUST be bisexual, if you think otherwise you're homophobic, it's TOTALLY CANON YOU GUISE! And then act like they're fighting some noble fight, when in reality all they give a shit about is their slash shipping.

And this has nothing to do with Supernatural at all. Nope.

LOL. That's pretty much what I'm talking about, yeah.

I also hate the "they must be bi" argument because people who are exclusively gay or straight can have a history of dating or sleeping with people of multiple sexes too. Experimentation and the closet are things. Unless someone states their orientation outright, it's never as simple as "they _____, they must be _____!".

Re: I gotta rant a little

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
That is an excellent point!

Re: I gotta rant a little

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
That is true. But I wish it wasn't the default assumption that someone who's bi must be closeted or experimenting. It really is just better not to assume at all, and if someone tells you* what their orientation is, then goodness, respect what they're telling you and don't try to tell them they're really something else!

*You being general you, ofc, not you personally.

Re: I gotta rant a little

[personal profile] sarillia 2015-02-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh definitely. There are times that argument is used for shitty reasons.

Honestly the times when I really want to scream, "Not everyone is out of the closet!" is when people insist that a character must be straight because they're only ever express attraction to the opposite sex. I wouldn't claim there's evidence that they're gay or bi or whatever, but it insist that they're straight ignores the reality of what being anything other than straight is like for a lot of people.

I just get really annoyed at people insisting that a character (or occasionally a real historical person, which really pisses me off when they ignore what the person said about themselves) must be a certain orientation.

Which is getting off topic from the bi issue, so my apologies.

Re: I gotta rant a little

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"but it insist that they're straight ignores the reality of what being anything other than straight is like for a lot of people."

That's very true and an excellent point.

Also, I think all of this is still relevant to the bi issue, because of all the assumptions and misconceptions, and the idea that bisexuality doesn't really exist. A lot of people will insist a character that could be bi must be one or the other, just as people will insist a character that could be gay must be straight. And there are a lot of bi people, like me, who aren't open about it and are doing the whole "passing" thing.

Honestly, whether a person is bi, gay, or lesbian, not being straight can be way more complicated than it should be and than a lot of straight people realize.

Re: I gotta rant a little

[personal profile] chrys 2015-02-03 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's very true, yes. As much as I wish more people wrote characters as bi in fic, it's not a matter of "they dated both = bi". It just sucks that most times people write a slash pairing as the exception to a character's orientation, it's written in a way that implies "see, they're not gay, don't worry he's still a manly dude."

Re: I gotta rant a little

[personal profile] sarillia 2015-02-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I definitely agree with that. It gets complicated because there are so many shitty attitudes out there and sometimes the argument against one can be used to support another.

Re: I gotta rant a little

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-02-03 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
...A while back I realized that about 80% of the characters I write (in original work as well as fanfic are bisexual or coded that way). Initially I was a bit leery about it, because I wondered if I wasn't being inclusive enough for the rest of the crowd.

Then I was like fuck it; I'll write how I want to write because it's not like the rest of the world is overflowing with bisexual representation anyway.

Lol. I went through the same realization. Even my DA game characters are mostly bi.
