Talk to your dentist (or if you don't have a regular dentist, whatever the cheapest one near you is) and tell them that there is no way for you to come up with the full $4000, but you're willing to work with them and pay on an installment plan. Odds are that they can work something out for you (and might even drop the price--I know a guy who went to a walk-in clinic for some sort of medical test and got them to drop the price by 75% because he was paying cash and the people were like "oh yeah, we just charge as much as the insurance companies are willing to pay, we'll totally give you a deal").

Otherwise, the dental school option is actually a really good idea if you can find one nearby.
