(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)Recently I've seen
~ a secret about fanfic writers crossing over into published stuff classified as not fandom (fanfic isn't fandom now?)
~ a secret about liking a fictional (abusive?) relationship in a TV show (don't know the fandom, I'm guessing) as not being secret
~ a secret about wanting hate sex fanfic for a particular pairing/fandom classified as not secret (I dunno, I think a lot of people would hesitate to say that under their usual name)
Is there some fanfic failbar rule now or something? You're letting a lot of other fanfic secrets through at the same time so I don't understand.

"Doctor Who sucks!!! Where did all the ___ fic go?? People in this fandom are dicks!!" is not anyone's secret. They're just random complaints/accusations/requests for help with nothing personal attached. "I hate Doctor Who because ____" would count. "I want more fic of ____" would count. "I'm tired of all the ___ behavior in this fandom and they're driving me out of it" would count, but the first three don't.
Can you tell me which fandomy secret got failbarred as nonfandom? I don't remember one, unless it was so vague about "writers" that it could be literally any kind of writer/about writing in general and wasn't specific to fanfic at all. Note: users' original characters/writing do not count as fandom unless they're actually fandom OCs, like "OCs in Hogwarts" sure but "my personal world of elves that has nothing to do with any other fandom world" nope. Or possibly it was all about social justice and not about fanfic, those are the usual two reasons.
ETA: Oh, I remember the fanfic one: it was fandom related but not a secret. "WHY DON'T YOU GUYS WRITE FIC?" is again, just a random question thrown out there.
I mean, purely "a thing people would probably hesitate to say under their usual name" is not really sufficient to make something a secret. If someone was really sexist or something and just posted a wall of slurs calling every female character names, would that be a SECRET? Not really. (Yes things like that have actually happened in the past. Images of fandoms that just go "THIS SHOW/FANDOM/CHARACTER SUCKS")

Only I would consider those kinds of things a secret. A lot of people don't feel comfortable saying these things in public and hide these feelings to themselves, perhaps for years. Isn't that the very definition of a secret?
On the other hand, if you mean those particular secrets weren't interestingly put, then yes. Most of the secrets on fs aren't really secrets, but it's fun anyway.
Thanks again.

Maybe, but the point is nobody can tell. How do we know whether this is actually a secret or someone that wanted to piss people off by going "SHERLOCK SUCKS/FEMALE CHARACTER IS A SLUT/FANS OF X ARE STUPID"? Because we've actually had that in the past and had people using this as a platform to do that, which is why stuff like that doesn't count any more - people have to put in at least a little effort to make it something personal instead of random insult flinging.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 01:02 am (UTC)(link)A lot of the secrets everyone calls troll on are opinions that I've actually heard other people express for real. Nearly every single one. Stupid secrets and real ones aren't mutually exclusive.
But you're right, nobody can tell. Thanks for sifting through all this stuff and making some kind of call on it anyway.
