Thanks for the responses, everyone. I'm in the UK and don't know if that makes a difference. I just walked into a random place, said I wanted my ears pierced, and they didn't say anything about different sizes or anything, just let me pick out the bar or the ring (I don't know what it's called, the little hoop with the ball hooking it together). I just don't like the idea of permanent huge holes in my ear!

But maybe it'll be okay if I let this heal up for a few weeks, and then take them out and put in smaller studs?

It really does sound like you got an actual piercing instead of regular earring holes. You'll be okay either way and it doesn't take weeks for lobes to heal unless it gets infected.

If you were pierced with a 14 or 16 gauge, you should have no problem switching to normal earrings. A lot of ear piercing places actually use slightly thicker than usual earrings for ear piercing, so it's normal for your holes to heal around a slightly bigger earring anyway. It's hardly permanent and unless the look of them bothers you a lot, you can wait until they're healed and switch them for smaller ones and you should be fine. If it worries you though, you can always go back to the piercing place to be sure.

It's going back quite a while, but when I had my ears pierced as a child, the studs had significantly thicker posts than anything I've ever worn since. I just assumed that while the initial piercing is healing up, you want the hole to end up slightly wider than the average post/wire of regular earrings so as to get past the natural reaction to heal back up at that stage.

If these are very new, you'll also feel as though they're very thick and heavy for a while until you get used to having them in.

Lobe stretching is a specific thing (that takes a while to achieve, gradually using thicker and thicker posts/rings until you get the size you want) that won't be something piercers think you want if you just go in for regular ear piercing, so I don't think you need to worry. Unless you actually had skin punched out, it's not going to be a big hole once it's healed up.

Even huge holes (like, put your finger through them holes) will shrink over time. Have no worries - your new piercings will heal faster because of having captive bead rings in them, and when you switch them out for 'regular' earrings with a post or french hook, they won't look any different than any other ears with earrings.

Just keep 'em clean and don't fret.

got mine pierced as a kid. generally you get thicker piercings for comfort and so that when the piercing heals the hole isnt too small for "normal" earrings.
