So...you have reading comprehension difficulties? The cardboard characters (male and female) are the whole point and after the reveal the writing style of the book actually changes and if become a much nicer read..

It seriously sounds like everyone here only read the first chapter or so and then gave up because they didn't like the style/characters.

Yep, pretty much. I don't care for Scalzi's writing style, it's a bit minimalist for my taste. But I get the impression here that a lot of people didn't get what he was trying to do in terms of mocking a specific example of the SF genre.

To be fair, if they didn't get it then I guess he didn't do it well enough. I thought it was well-done (and hilarious) in its meta, but if people didn't, that's mostly on the author.

That being said, I do find the "I'd like this book more if it were just telling a generic story we've seen before." Because if you write it like a normal book but keep the plot as is, it becomes just a straight retread of every "creation meets creator" story ever. Maybe OP thinks that sounds better, but I'm glad we got one of those stories that actually made that meta step in a different direction.

Disclaimer: I've not read the book, so I can't speak on the quality of said book. This is just a general observation.

Some people just won't get satire, no matter how well it's done. So you can't really say it's the author's fault that a particular reader didn't get it.
