I really don't think there is anyone who thinks you are a monster for disliking a character that kills a dog, and sings about it like it's funny.

oh wait, there is the "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT POVERTY IS LIKE!" crowd. I'd say that'd be tumblr, but I am vaguely remembering a secret from a long time back about how someone hated Katniss because she tried to drown a stray cat (for no real explained reason) and some people flipped out over that and how drowning cats (and presumably killing dogs) is all part of being poor. or something.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't "for no explained reason". It was because it was a sickly stray kitten that the family really didn't have the resources to support. A lot of people kill unwanted animals, thinking it's better than leaving them out in the wild to starve or be eaten.

It's not something I agree with at all, but it's not "meaningless animal murder, yey!".

It really doesn't have much to do with being poor; I've known middle-class people that murdered innocent unwanted domesticated animals too. Likewise, there are homeless people that will go without food so that their pet can have food.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
No, nothing was explained in the book. Katniss did not have to kill a stray cat that wasn't her responsibility in the first place.

And if she had wanted to give him a merciful death, drowning is NOT how she would have done it. She knows perfectly well how to kill animals quickly, yet she opted to give the kitten an excruciating death.

It's kind of weird that you'd defend this. No one ever said "it's a poor people thing" or that middle class people aren't cruel to animals. But it IS a despicable thing. If you're going to eat the cat, fine, kill it quickly. If you're putting it out of its misery, kill it quickly. Drowning it? Fuck you, no matter how unfortunate your circumstances are.

(not to mention, a cat, of all domestic pets, is by far best suited to take care of itself.)

But people drowning unwanted cats was sort of an accepted thing for a long time--I think it's more like a trope than Katniss picking it for sadistic reasons. It comes up in, let's see, Sandman at least once, Louisa May Alcott, referenced at least once in Diana Wynne Jones, a major plot point in Connie Willis's To Say Nothing of the Dog, and that's literally off the top of my head. I hate reading about it, to be sure, but I think it's much more likely a variation on that then a specific moment of thought-out sadism.

Shit, I was wondering if there was something I was missing when I was living out of my car about a year back. Killing dogs for money and drowning cats for no reason! No wonder I was so unfulfilled.

No but for real, screw anyone that thinks "killing dogs for money" is a viable option even when you're that poor. I'd have sooner cut off my own leg and eaten it than killing someone's pet because someone else thought it was annoying. Like what the fuck.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I could see that being true in another culture or time, but to say that's true now is laughable.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever, it's still arbitrary sentiment until the same people start saying katniss shouldn't kill animals of any kind no matter how hungry she is.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard anyone say that?

It's obviously ridiculous to say Katniss should be a vegan when she can hardly feed herself and her family. But I'm not sure how drowning a kitten factors in, unless she was going to eat it, and still then surely she could have killed it in a more humane way.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
oh wait, there is the "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT POVERTY IS LIKE!" crowd.

Pretty much this, as well as "they were punishing pretentious people who had it coming!" crowd. Angel is basically supposed to be, well, an Angel.

Although I will say apart from that, she was one of the less annoying characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what was really confusing. If any of the other characters had done it, at least you could understand. They're supposed to be fuck-ups. But Angel's character is literally supposed to be the angelic one. The nice guy who brings everyone together and makes people smile and is such a sweetheart, etc. Why have him kill the dog and joke about it later, of all the characters?

I could never buy Katniss as a hero after that. I hated her forever for it tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's really weird but I can't remember that at all. I'm really sensitive to animal killing in media (since I'm an animal lover and a vegetarian) but I can't recall it. Does seem out of step with the rest of that world though because I imagine that pets would be rat catchers left to find food in their own.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't end up going through with it (I forget if it was because Prim caught her or if she just couldn't bring herself to do it). It certainly wasn't meant to be a laudable moment - it was more foreshadowing for "Katniss thinks she will do whatever it takes to survive, but has a soft heart way down deep" plus "this family is so close to starvation that a single mouth more might push them over the edge."

I don't care. Additionally she treated the cat with resentment for a long time after that.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
...so you have more compassion for a cat she was trying to save from painfully starving to death than humans that could have starved to death since they didn't have extra food?

You would rather people die than a cat. Jfc. get some help.

Just let the damn cat go?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
They kept it because Prim loved it, and Katniss would do anything for Prim. And like most cats, once he had Prim as his person I don't think he gave a fuck if Katniss resented him.

Even in the narrative it was presented as a flaw that Katniss behaved the way she did with the cat, so I'm not sure why you're defending it.

If I want to dislike a fictional character for the way she treated an animal, I'm entitled to do so. It's not irrational, and it's far from the only reason I dislike her anyway (I dislike the books period).

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I was pointing out why she didn't just let the cat go.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake.

"Saving it from painfully starving to death" - where did the text say that was Katniss's goal? And how the hell was she giving it a mercy killing by drowning, one of the most terrifying, stressful and painful ways to die?

I agree it was probably included in the text to show how tough, hardcore, and survivalist Katniss is. But there was no explanation for this, none, and this was not a mercy killing, this was cruelty.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
and how the fuck was katniss going to die if she didn't drown a kitten? I think you're confused.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
oh god, how dare someone dislike a cat!

Oh god how dare someone mistreat an animal!

That's also part of being a sociopath.

Unless you actually intend to eat the animal. Then it's got a purpose.

Anybody who thinks random animal murder is "culture" is a fucking moron.
