Don't most people acknowledge that was fucked up?

I mean, I don't really know, I fucking hate Rent, but that was my impression.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
From what I remember from my Renthead days, a lot of us were like "yeah, it was fucked up but it was in the name of fighting the man!"

Which is fine, except the poor dog wasn't the problem. It was probably barking all the time because it had crappy owners who'd leave him outside all night long.

I always thought that it wasn't an actual thing she did, it was just a weird song she was singing... until it was mentioned later. It seemed so random and out of character for someone that's supposed to be an "angel". I don't really know what it was trying to demonstrate, or if the writers just thought it'd be funny...

I think the real secret here is the fact that you love RENT.

Unless you're a time traveller from the 1990s, in which case, invest in Apple.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP but what's wrong with Rent?!

A lot of people like RENT.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't think there is anyone who thinks you are a monster for disliking a character that kills a dog, and sings about it like it's funny.

oh wait, there is the "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT POVERTY IS LIKE!" crowd. I'd say that'd be tumblr, but I am vaguely remembering a secret from a long time back about how someone hated Katniss because she tried to drown a stray cat (for no real explained reason) and some people flipped out over that and how drowning cats (and presumably killing dogs) is all part of being poor. or something.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't "for no explained reason". It was because it was a sickly stray kitten that the family really didn't have the resources to support. A lot of people kill unwanted animals, thinking it's better than leaving them out in the wild to starve or be eaten.

It's not something I agree with at all, but it's not "meaningless animal murder, yey!".

It really doesn't have much to do with being poor; I've known middle-class people that murdered innocent unwanted domesticated animals too. Likewise, there are homeless people that will go without food so that their pet can have food.

Shit, I was wondering if there was something I was missing when I was living out of my car about a year back. Killing dogs for money and drowning cats for no reason! No wonder I was so unfulfilled.

No but for real, screw anyone that thinks "killing dogs for money" is a viable option even when you're that poor. I'd have sooner cut off my own leg and eaten it than killing someone's pet because someone else thought it was annoying. Like what the fuck.

lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-02-05 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeah, that's definitely a pretty weird moment. I mean, lord knows I've harbored less-than-humanitarian urges towards the baying hellbeagles across the street sometimes, but I still wouldn't want them DEAD.

Then again, during the Homeless Year, if someone offered me a grand to just play drums, regardless of whether an "unfortunate accident" occurred to said beagle or not... I dunno, I might've been desperate enough to take it.

Now that I think of it, that entire bit doesn't really make sense. Who tries to drive a hellhound to despair by playing the drums? WHY WOULD IT WORK?

OP, you are making me question everything I know about Rent.

Overall, I liked Angel, but I have always hated that aspect of her. And given she's the only character to die (without coming back) in the play/movie, one could argue she paid for her crime. A life for a life, essentially.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that too.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Not to start shit, but...

Why is everyone in the comments (and the secret) referring to Angel as she? I thought it was obvious that he was a dude who liked dressing in drag and not transgender...whenever someone referred to him with female pronouns it seemed pretty clear they were joking (or I guess joking isn't really the right word, but going along with the drag persona, not that the actual person was a woman).

For a moment I kept thinking this was an NCIS secret and kept wondering why the text did not compute.

...I was actually just thinking about making a RENT secret myself, and yeah, this scene is part of why I don't like the musical. Poor dog. :( It wasn't it's fault that it's owners were dicks and got a dog that wasn't good for NYC!

Huh. I thought most people were like, "And that proves the character isn't perfect." Accepted it as a flaw since all the characters in the show are flawed, and liked her anyway.

But then, I don't delve far into the online fandom.

In La Boheme, it was a parrot, and the analogous character out-and-out poisoned it.

The dog was the first thing that go to me, first time I heard the soundtrack.

Then later on it occurred to me that it's a little rich for Maureen to be exulting about starting a riot when she isn't the one, I don't know, facing any consequences for rioting.

Image: Angel from Rent, dressed as Santa Claus?

Text: I love RENT. I really, really do. I know every moment. It got me though some awful times in life. I love everything but HER.

Angel killed someone’s dog. For money.

I hate her for it.

Secret because that apparently makes me some kinda ignorant monster.

The monster is Angel.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
YES THIS SO MUCH.

When your establishing character moment is killing someones pet, I will NOT like the character, fatal illness be dammed.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
People give that much of a shit about a fictional dog that you don't even see? Jeez.

Also, technically, the dog killed itself. All Angel did was play some drums. The dog decided to jump off the balcony. It's not like she threw it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that always bothered me too, to the point where I couldn't just ignore it. I hate when animals in media are treated as "disposable". I don't know much about the fandom, though, so I don't know how much it's talked about. I actually considered making a similar secret here years ago.
