Yeah, that was really disappointing. This place acts like we can't be disappointed because 'no one is perfect'.

I don't think people see the tenor of the reaction as 'disappointed'. That's maybe the whole crux of the issue. Disappointed but understanding common humanity is fine but, at the very least, that doesn't seem to be how people on here perceive the reaction. I don't know whether or not that perception is accurate, and I'm sincerely curious about what you have to say.

Maybe it's because I follow sensible people (though to be honest I have very rarely seen these terrifying SJW the internet at large likes to blame tumblr for), but as a whole, whenever someone does something, immediately this place jumps to "WELL OBVIOUSLY TUMBLR IS WRONG UGH " until someone rolls in and points things out and we get to 'okay, they were wrong but tumblr didn't have to do this' which is fine.

I haven't seen this place talk about Mackie but I've been less active. What i've seen is people being disappointed and talking about a lot of nuances about being, specifically, a black person in hollywood and having to play up to the old whites in power.

Personally i'm not torn over supporting a problematic marginalized person - depending on the offense, I can drop you just as easily as a white person.

Why would someone want to bother with someone saying sexist shit though? Maybe I have a higher tolerance than most of FS, but I don't find any of that terrible. (Unless you're trying to make a point about how literally everyone is terrible regardless their race or gender - on that I can agree)

I'm not checking for him either after this.

Bah. I don't know. I agree that nothing that was quoted there is really that bad. But the idea of cutting people off for saying something sexist, in a vacuum, is something that bothers me. I mean, there's all kinds of reasons you might want to bother with him, he could be wonderful for a million reasons. And it's, you know, one joke?

I admit that I'm probably the weird one in terms of tolerance, though, because I'm not sure there's any real point where I'm going to cut someone off because of an opinion they hold. Because of acting like a jerk consistently and being unable to stop, yes, but I don't think that's the same thing. But that's just how I feel.

I looked up what he said, and Jesus, he sounds like those whiny MRAs who bitch about women being frigid to men and withholding sex from them and shit. No one owes you attention just because you said Hi to them.

I think that's more than fair.

It does seem like so much of this is a matter of perception, to the point where you can find just about any kind of reaction you want to something somewhere on the Internet. I'm sure the people who say Tumblr is losing its shit can find posts to source that, just as much as you can find people having reasonable discussions. It makes talking about this kind of thing fucking impossible sometimes.

Probably the best response is just to forget about whether people on the Internet are ridiculous or not, assume that they are, stop worrying about which digital tribe is guilty or innocent of which sins, hang out with reasonable people, and let everything else sort itself out.

Ah, makes sense.

Huh. See, this is why I care about characters, not actors. Actors are reall people and will fuck up just like everyone else. Characters... have more leeway seeing as they're fictional.

Yeah. In a way, it kind of creeps me out, how people sometimes seem to mistake actors for their characters, put the actors on a pedestal, only to get really upset when the actor invariably falls off.
