I think they've also seen the success of shows like Transparent and OITNB which feature popular trans characters and they decided to cash in. Surprisingly though, a lot of the reaction on tumblr is negative about the revelation of Beaiste being trans. A lot of people seem to either feel like Glee is trying too hard or is completely fucking up and retconning parts of Beiste's character.
