Glee

I don't know how many other people on here are still keeping up with Glee out of some Stockholm Syndrome kind of thing, but is anyone kind kind of disappointed that they decided to make Shannon (now Sheldon) Beiste trans? I mean, I'm glad that we're getting more trans characters on tv, but one of the great things about Beiste was even though she didn't fit into traditional gender norms and she didn't "look feminine," she was still a strong woman who didn't take people's crap, especially when people thought a woman couldn't coach football. Except now the show is telling us that the reason Beiste decided to get into football and a bunch of other none "girly" activities is...because she's actually a he and felt inclined to do those things because he desperately wanted to be masculine. Like, they literally had the character say that. It just kind of feels like a slap in the face to female fans who found Beiste to be a very relatable female character. But, again, it's good to have more trans storylines on tv (even if it's Glee) so...I'm conflicted.

That's fucking stupid and perfectly Glee-like.

And no, I don't think it's a "any storyline is better than none" situation.

NAYRT - I think it's probably a "Ryan Murphy wants to be the first to comment on The Issues." This was originally announced pretty soon after Leela Alcorn's death, which alone left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Fair enough point. If it's any consolation, the scenes where Beiste comes out as trans have actually been handled surprisingly well (even if they seem trite) but the fact that they chose to make Beiste trans just leaves a bad taste out of my mouth. It definitely feels like they just picked the most "masculine" female character and decided to make them trans because why not (well, that and they probably really want to nail some emmys for their last season)

I haven't watched Glee since the season before last, but I agree. I loved that about her character. Why not have Unique (I think that was her name?) be the one transitioning?

That would have been more interesting. Unsurprisingly though, Glee was very rocky with its portrayal of Unique. For a while, it seemed like it was unclear whether Unique was trans or just crossdressing (it also seemed unsure whether Glee really knew the difference between the two) until it finally seemed definite that she was trans. But even then, she's still referred to as a "crossdressing Mercedes," which...I don't even know where to start there. The actor who portrays Unique has also been demoted having a recurring role so I don't think we'll be seeing much from her plotwise this season

What the fuck. It sounds like someone on the writing staff's been browsing tumblr too much.

I think they've also seen the success of shows like Transparent and OITNB which feature popular trans characters and they decided to cash in. Surprisingly though, a lot of the reaction on tumblr is negative about the revelation of Beaiste being trans. A lot of people seem to either feel like Glee is trying too hard or is completely fucking up and retconning parts of Beiste's character.

I haven't been watching much, but I heard about your storyline and your thoughts are exactly what mine were. It honestly made me angry. Having a trans storyline good. Having it be about your one non-feminine previously female character is not. They basically seem like they are saying that if you aren't feminine you probably aren't actually a girl. And no.

I don't follow GLEE anymore but honestly I understand how you feel. Why couldn't they taken a "girly" character and have them transition? Why do the people who transition always have to fit into stereotypes?

There are women out there who aren't stereotypically feminine and there are transmen out there who wouldn't have fit in the stereotypical boyish box either before or after they transitioned.

Admittedly I haven't watched Glee since like, the start of S3, but wasn't the entire point of Beiste's character that she was upset that she wasn't taken seriously as a woman because she was into traditionally masculine things?

But then I know they're not above completely retconning tons of shit about their characters, so idk. It's probably just a desperate grab for any viewers at all for this last half-season.

yeah, that's what I remember about her too. Typical Glee shit.

Yeah, it was a pretty major part of her character. And now they're just kind of...shat on it. There was also no real lead-up or foreshadowing to the whole trans storyline.

I think this is the really annoying thing about Glee. They're trying really hard to be progressive in their characters and portrayal of a diverse cast but they tend to perpetuate stereotypes and crap like that.

WHAT Glee is still running??

I haven't watched in years, but...

(Anonymous) 2015-02-06 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought part of the whole character was that s/he still wanted someone to think she was a pretty girl and love her, even though she coached football, was really big n burly. I always remember that conversation from that one episode in season one or two. Granted, that's also when I stopped watching, so maybe that's why.

I really liked that about her character. It was something I identified with (I know, I know, it's Glee), and I guess now that's... gone?
