I adore Sansukh. It's one of my very, very favorite fics ever. Sooooooooo good.

I fell behind with it but I absolutely think that it's one of the best fics I've read. It's incredibly rich in a way few fics are, and the voices of the characters are so strong! As much as I loved Thorin in this, once I got to the Legolas/Gimli stuff I could not wait for more of them. I've rarely read them written so well.

I agree with everything you're saying here (except being behind LOL).

There was a thread on FFA a few posts back kinda slagging on the fic which made me really sad because it's so so well done. The world building and the ensemble cast--wow. And I like that this is the one of the few fics I've read where Thorin figures out who he wants to be and how to handle his anger and how to deal with the mistakes he made by himself through genuine character growth and not through the power of Bilbo's healing cock love.

FFA Is that fail fandom anon? (I've heard of this place, but don't really know it.)

Is there any particular reason they didn't like it? I mean, people are entitled to their opinion, but this is one of the only fics in Tolkien fandom that I look at and go, "Damn, this person put an insane amount of time and thought into this, and although Tolkien would probably not be cool with the gay romance, I think he would appreciate how massive and superb the cast is!"

IA about Thorin coming to terms with his mistakes, too. Not many fics deal with that in any in-depth way, and it's nice to see him grow without Bilbo being there to nudge him into it.

Yep. Failfandomanon. You have to post anon there or it gets immediately deleted. I mostly read rather than comment, but it's a fun place. It can be wanky, but it's a good place to go to for fic recs and etc.

Some of the complaining was about the fic's use of conventions in that fandom that have become ubiquitous--secret names, Dwarves having a One, etc. Personally, I think she handles all those elements really well and in a way that doesn't seem cliched or clumsy. I also think she was on the front end of using some of those conventions.

Another complaint was the use of the words dwarrow and dwarrowdam as a ploy to sound overly "Tolkienish" or pretentious which is utter horseshit IMHO. LOL Even though he doesn't use the word dwarrow in the actual text of the story, Tolkien suggests the use of the word dwarrow (in an intro? IDK, I know I've read it). It's not made up out of whole cloth or any more pretentious than having Elves speak lines of Elvish in fic.

A further complaint is that the fic is having events unfold in the Quest in exactly the same way. "What's the point of reading the whole Fellowship Arc again?" Again, that complaint makes no sense to me. *throws hands in the air*

I think it's very true that all of us are always watching and reading different things and only every now and again do we magically coincide. LOL

Ah, see, I'm one of those people that don't particularly care about something being a bit cliche or predictable as long as it's well done. Plus, I agree, she does a good job of making those things her own and as real as possible for the universe. I would find it easy to believe she was one of the first to explore those conventions considering how long the fic has been around; they don't bother me at all.

I don't even know what to say to that second complaint... Even if she were trying to sound more 'Tolkienish', isn't that the point?! It makes sense and doesn't feel off-kilter, IDK what more people want.

The point of rereading the Fellowship arc is to see it from a difference angle! There's a lot more going on than just the Fellowship arc when you consider Thorin's side of the story. I don't know what the author has in mind, but I wouldn't be particularly surprised if she kept writing about Legolas and Gimli after the quest is finished. There's lots to explore. (With the added benefit of Thorin flipping out over Gimli hooking up with an elf. He might come to terms with it eventually, but it is not this day.)

Was it the “Thorin loses his shit" part that prompted this? I hope so!

He was freaking out at the thought of Legolas and Gimli being friends, so once they actually express their feelings and consummate their relationship... Thorin will nearbought die a second time.

I actually caught up a little earlier and shit, I never would've expected Thorin to be the one to rat out Gimli about his feelings for Legolas. And Thorin and Legolas holding a civil conversation?! Wow! I love how much Thorin grew in this fic (I'm not sure I've ever seen this much character development for him before) and adore the Bilbo/Thorin bits too. I was so pleased they finally got to talk and that Legolas and Gimli are now on the same page. This fic makes me so happy.

I almost wish I hadn't caught up because now there's nothing to read! I don't know how often the author updates but this fic has reminded me of how awesome and also painful WIP's can be.

Between this and the sequel to Nothing Gold Can Stay (an incredible Bagginshield AU) idk what to do with myself.

OOoh, what kind of AU? Like a modern AU? Or just a canon divergence AU? I tend to like the latter more than the former for Tolkien.

Re: Gimli/Legolas fics

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-02-08 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yea, I typically like canon AU's more too with Tolkien but I will read certain modern AU's as long as they're well written. I tend to start on those when I feel like I've read all the Canon divergent stuff.

But it is a modern AU where Thorin is King of Erebor and Gandalf secures Bilbo a position as young Kili and Fili's tutors. As you can imagine it turns into a bit more than that, but it was beautifully written and such a tense adventure. You might not like it since it's so far removed from canon, but I was dying to finish, haha.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1047210/chapters/2094253 here it is! I might have swooned a few times at Thorin in later chapters...

But Bilbo is fantastic and I love the way he handles Thorin. (No, not in THAT way.)
