Ditto. If I'm going to read fic it's because I want to explore the canon/characters in more depth. I don't get that if they're working in a bakery. (Unless they're working undercover)

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience, OP. I don't really get high school AUs either.

I found high school tolerable. While it sometimes looks nice in retrospect, that's just because college was much worse for me. It looks good only by comparison.

I always get confused when I see things like this because AU means something different now than it did when I started in fandom.

After almost two decades in fandom, it pretty much means the same thing as it did when I started.

When I started, it just meant a deviation. So, if you wrote a different ending to an episode or season, or explored what would happen if a character made a different choice, that was an AU.

But I also started in places where no one seemed interested in taking things out of the canon world, so maybe that's where the disconnect is.

Huh, interesting.

From my experience, those things would've been AR's (Alternate Realities, or possible Alternate Histories/Timelines), not AU's. AU has always been taking canon characters/events/elements and placing them in a new and different-from-canon contextual setting as far as I know.

I've seen that described as canon divergence these days. But I do remember AU being used for it way back.

Huh... I've been calling those "AC"/"alternate continuity" for years, and have never even heard of the phrase "canon divergence" (which I like much better! and will probably switch to from now on). I must live in a different corner of fandom to everyone else...

I've always seen that used as a specific subtype of AU ("canon-AU", short for "canon-diverence AU").

It's been one of those terms that, annoyingly, has more than one meaning and Fandom has resisted separating the meanings. The canon divergence meaning (different ending, different choice, "For Want Of A Nail") could also be called AT for "Alternate Timeline" but that term failed to really gain ground.

AU has always meant both canon divergence and taking the characters out of the canon setting and putting them in a stock stereotype setting with no relation to canon (i.e. High School, Coffee Shops, general Modern world, non-magic, Regency etc.).

I mostly agree with you. I do enjoy the occasional Hogwarts AU, though.

Do people write 'high school AU' for that? I mean, they're already in high school... all the AUs I've seen of it, while changing various elements, still have them at a Hogwarts more-or-less as it is in cacnon, i.e. a school of magic. (To me a 'high school AU' for Harry Potter would be taking the magic out of it and making it a regular high school. Which I have never seen done, though there are enough fics out there that someone probably has at some point.)

I've read a ton of Harry Potter fic and I've only seen like two or three non-magical AUs that take place in a regular school. I guess most people are just too attached to Rowling's world building to do something so mundane (not that I'm complaining. what's the point of a boring ass non-magical Harry Potter? it doesn't interest me at all)

I've seen some. What I meant is that I like AUs where people from other fandoms go to Hogwarts. Seen some Supernatural ones and think I saw a Criminal Minds one once, currently reading a Grey's Anatomy one.

I like the canon divergence type of AU - change one key event and see how big an effect it has. It stays in the same world, same character stories, but tells a different story to canon.
