Maybe that's just it. Maybe it's fun to imagine a world where high school didn't mostly suck and everything was like in the movies.

This. So much fic is wish fulfillment, is it that strange to think that people want to make up an idealized high school experience? Even – heck, maybe especially – people for whom high school was a less than pleasant experience irl.

Came here to say exactly this.

While I feel exactly like OP and wouldn't personally want to touch anything that reminded me of my high school days with a mile-long pole, I can definitely see the appeal of the do-over where you have control over the protag and can 'fix' all the things that were awful experiences for you. I can see how that could be very empowering for some people.

Yup. I do not read them often - but when I do, it's this. I mean, my teens sucked so badly, I didn't really have a normal school experience. So, it's fun indulging in an idealized version of it? To relive a fictional youth I didn't have through fictional characters.
