(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)I think the reason that he gets so much shit for it is that they actually made Hank hitting Jan part of a storyline. His actions caused him to get kicked out of the avengers and Jan divorced him. When Reed and Spidey slapped their wives, it wasn't really referenced again and didn't become part of a whole plot line, so people just kind of forgot about it (although the Reed panel was kind of memetic for a while). With Hank on the other hand, Marvel got a shit ton of mileage out of him slapping Jan and never let people forget about it to the point where they made ultimate!Hank a straight up psychopath who did things like let his ants attack his wife while she was still shrunken down. Funnily enough, the writer of the issue where Hank slapped Jan claims that he didn't write Hank as intentionally slapping her. He intended for Hank to throw up his arms in frustration and for Jan to accidentally get smacked as he did so, but the artist drew it in a much more dramatic way that made it seem intentional. And then they decided to just run with it because they figured it was interesting (http://www.jimshooter.com/2011/03/hank-pym-was-not-wife-beater.html)
