Re: My unpopular music-related opinions, let me show you them.

"- However, most modern alternative rock is terrible.
- Most indie rock is also terrible."

HOLY *BLEEP*, do you know how much I agree with this? Mind you, there are still good bands out there but the amount of garbage I have to wade through to find them is so incredibly high. I have no idea where to start.

I used to listen to the radio, watch music channels and hit up youtube for music. But I have been so discouraged lately that I end up listening to my old stuff over and over again. (Just mixes of Black Flag, UK Subs, The Clash, Joy Division, Gang of Four, The Cure, Agent Orange, Killing Joke, Adolescents, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blur, Placebo and their ilk.) The last new band that I liked was Blouse and that was some time ago. How the devil does one go searching for bands with that similar sound?

I've been bored with the same-old same-old sound of most pop music for quite a long time, (my fallbacks are 70s: Bowie, Roxy Music, New York Dolls, T-Rex, Eno, &c) but I have discovered a number of new sounds via NPR's All Songs Considered podcast.

I'll check it out thanks. By the way, great taste in music. (I adore all things Bowie.)

fwiw, the ONLY singer-songwriter that I've liked since, er, 1980 or so is Ani diFranco. She slides around genre-wise (she was initially classified as punk-folk, I think), but you might like her rockier stuff such as the Dilate album.

Also recently EMA (Erika Anderson); it's been a while since I listened to any Souixsie Souix, but I recall thinking of the Banshees when I heard "Neuromancer" and "Butterfly Knife" (though I can't quite say why).

I'm not quite as punk as you. I was more into New Order, the Church, 10 000 Maniacs, and Midnight Oil (and other bands that were too mainstream to be cool, hah). I like post-rock (which is sort of what New Order prefigured and the Church became). So, Kaki King, Mogwai, Ladytron, etc.

Of more conventional pop/rock bands, I like Imagine Dragons all right.

Bon Iver is somewhere in between, I think, but you might find his self-titled album over-produced.

Sóley's sort of in that area, too, I guess, kind of atmospheric?

Storm Large isn't exactly new, nor entirely obscure, but I never know if people know her.
Storm Inc., "Ima Yora" (punk) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47hSeZP56lU
Storm Large, "Angels in Gas Stations" (modern pop?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EW_EbGUzxU
