I don't understand your confusion. You admit that your experience might not be universal, but then make the jump at the end of not understanding why someone would "want to think about that time in their lives".

You had a bad experience, and for that I'm sorry. It's perfectly understandable that you don't want to read high school AUs because they probably don't reflect your own feelings.

I, personally, had a fantastic time in high school, despite being a socially awkward nerd. Hence, I love reliving all those funny moments in AU fics.

It really is different on a person to person basis. No one's forcing you to read them-- at least, I hope not! So I hope you're able to find AUs that suit you better, if that's what you're looking for, but continue to acknowledge that your experience isn't everyone's.
