I think it could have paved the way for surprise gay endings in American children's animation, but I think there have been a few other shows/what-not that have done it before although the only one that currently comes to mind is Agents of Cracked, although it's a web series and maybe doesn't count

I can't say I've ever heard of that webseries. And I really can't think of any main-stream shows, besides Korra, that have had gay endings where the characters aren't immediately defined as being LGB. I think it would be amazing to have more mainstream shows willing to show more fluidity in sexuality, or maybe not feel so determined to define queer characters' sexuality instantly or make it a plot point.

Whether or not Korra was well done is a matter of opinion but I think it's amazing that neither was coded as gay, NO one expected it to actually happen (not because it wasn't plausible within the narrative but because it wasn't plausible because it was a mainstream show) and then it did. I'm not saying Sherlock is or should go gay but this show and loads of others have the "don't be delusional, it'll never happen" naysayers. I'd love to see the day where it's not considered delusional to seriously think a gay ending might happen.

With Sherlock it is chiefly because the creators have repeated time and again that they have no intention of doing it, yet a subsection of fans insist on sticking their fingers in their ears going "la la la I can't hear you but I'm 100% certain you will give us canon Johnlock and anyone who doubts it is [insert insult here]".

That goes way beyond what you are describing.

Ok but the creators saying they have no intention of doing has pretty slim credibilty as an arguement. They intentionally lie all the time, they love doing it.

Feel free to keep on believing (assuming you do, from the context) Johnlock will be canon (so long as you are not a jerk about it) - and I'll keep on thinking you'll be disappointed. Deal?

Boston Legal ended with the marriage of Denny and Alan, even though it is a nonsexual relationship. There is an entire section where they go over the fact that they unambiguously and unfailingly love each other. It's very heart warming.

Didn't they do that so that Alan could have marital-level rights while caring for Denny when his Alzheimer's progressed?

(But yes, so very very sweet. :))

That's a large part of their reasoning, yes. Plus spousal privilege and inheritance.

But Denny also says that he always wanted to get married one more time before he kicked the bucket. Denny even says "Like it or not, you're the man I love." Alan says he thought he'd get married for love and romance. Denny replies with "You love me."

I like to think that means that it isn't purely financial reasoning. It's the financial reasoning PLUS the fact that they love/enjoy the company of each other.
