You're definitely right about it being a risk, and that's probably why they did it (and why they need the Cute Animals). But given the way the series played out it just ended up unbalanced imo.
And I'm with you, I really liked the mature cast we got in LoK. I was all set to like LoK better than AtLA tbh, but then it... didn't go the distance.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)I still liked it better overall, though. The first had its charms, but I liked the LoK characters more. Not only the main four, but the older adults were really interesting, too.

There's a lot of stuff I liked about lok, but ultimately it never grabbed me the way atla did. Maybe it's because of the lack of cohesion, maybe because out of the main four I thought a lot of them were squandered - Mako was a jerk, I wanted more Korra and Asami interaction, I wanted Bolin to get more moments of development instead of ending up the chump so often. The adults were pretty awesome, but... idk. I really think that part of what made me love atla so much was that Zuko's redemption arc was /so/ well done.
LoK had so much potential for me, but ultimately AtLA is my favorite.
