Uh, I am an author making thousands of dollars with my original fiction through publishing (yes mostly through Amazon KDP), and I work damn hard at it (full time right now). It's hard work, but I'm enjoying myself, you know? (Well, a lot of the time, anyway!) Nobody has plagiarized me yet.

That shouldn't be your major concern here, unless it's something you're using subconsciously to sabotage yourself. Maybe the thought of actually learning more about writing, practicing, committing to finish projects...maybe that scares you most of all?

To be fair, though, the problem with plagiarizing your writing would be that you could always press legal charges/contact Amazon and demand that the plagiarist's work be removed. The work of fanfic writers has no protection.

That's not to say I think the OP's concerns are reasonable (I don't).

Honestly, I'M the one who should worry about plagiarizing. All my stories are posted on LJ after I get paid, to be read, copied, and yoinked by whoever wants them.

I've got over a hundred works up, and nobody has plagiarized me yet, that I know of. But they keep paying me, so *shrug*. Maybe original fic is less fun to plagiarize?

I'm starting to think I should've made it clear in the original secret (but it didn't seem terribly relevant, and I was trying to keep it short), but I do already write fanfics. Just not for certain fandoms. Somewhat ironically, my hang-ups have only prevented me writing those fanfics which are indisputably legal to publish...

Thing is, I don't really want to write professionally. You're quite right that I don't like the idea of much of what I think it would involve, and also, I don't think I have the talent (I already wrote a bit about this upthread, which I won't repeat). I'm glad you enjoy what you do, and get paid for it as well :) but that route is not for all of us.
