I liked that, too :D Too few people treat philosophers like human beings and recognize that they can be douchebags regardless of how nice their philosophical systems sound.

OMG YES

I was reading about Schopenhauer, and I was like: "Wow. This guy is an actual neckbeard. What an asshole."

I mean, the guy probably had pretty severe depression or something like that, but his views on women were just appalling.

High five! I hate Schopenhauer.

I really liked Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy because of this. He gets so emotional when talking about philosophers as people. And this goes both ways, too - some of the stuff he wrote there is basically just him gushing over this or that philosopher who happened to be a really kind and sympathetic guy IRL.

Schopenhauer was a stink in general. He lived his last 27 years in my home city with his misbehaved poodles. They had to evict him once because his dog pooped in the house or something.

lmao this gives me life

it's just interesting how we look at philosophers as these great idealized beings and really they were just a bunch of guys. and some of them owned dogs that pooped on people's carpets.

this is why i'm more fond of guys like Montaigne, who didn't take themselves too seriously
