I'm not saying it absolute would not happen OP, but... it's pretty unlikely. You'd first have to gain the kind of circulation and exposure to even reach your would-be plagiarists and as I'm sure you know, that's not guaranteed even in new, active fandoms. And not to be difficult, but... what sort of homework assignment requires a student to write literary classic fanfiction? Mind you, I have a degree in English and took many, many classes on the classics, writing, and comp lit. None of them ever asked for an assignment even remotely close to this.

If your fandoms are in the public domain, why don't you write the fic and self publish it yourself?
