(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)And when people ask for fic recs, it's always the same over-hyped stuff that gets recced. If something's that much of a masterpiece within the fandom, then assume that anyone who's interested in the fandom will have heard of it already and rec something different.
I still see years-old fics being recced endlessly in my fandoms, and I can't imagine how discouraging that sort of thing must be for newer folk who've only just started writing.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)I'm one of those authors whose fic has been getting heaps of recs lately and I try to balance it out by reccing more underground gems in the fandom. I wish other authors who get a bit of fandom fame would do the same. After the buzz of people liking your stuff fades, you definitely start going "wait guys, there is so much better stuff out there ..."
Honestly, sometimes I feel like it's just chapters of smut that draw the recs in like flies. Writing genfic is like ... guaranteed no views in my fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-08 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)I don't read that widely in some of my recent fandoms (there for the art more than the fic) but I also try to rec things I haven't seen people mention before whenever I'm asked. And I have no problem at all with someone getting their moment in the spotlight with their work, only when that moment turns into months and even years of the same few fics being recced at the expense of all the other amazing fics that have been written in that time that consistently get overlooked in favour of the same old Old Guard stuff.
A lot of recs turn into a circle-jerk between a handful of fandom BNFs.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)No one wants to bother digging for gems, but everyone wants to be known for being helpful and having good taste.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)I think that's very true.
For me, part of the excitement of getting into a fandom is precisely the digging for gems thing. I have never once gotten into a fandom and just hit up the first recs list I could find. I just trawl through archives and memes and whatever else.
Yeah a lot of the stuff I find is on the terrible-through-forgettable spectrum but even those will give you an internal gauge of the fandom and, especially if you're planning on writing for it, that's always a valuable thing to learn.
I've checked recs lists after the fact to see how well someone's taste meshes with mine, but never never as a guideline on what to read (to be fair, I do the same with professional reviews too - I only read them to see whether someone felt the same way I did after finishing something).
