This. I don't look at Elementary as an adaptation of the ACD Holmes, really. They're new characters, and Joan Watson is quite different from Dr. John Watson, and she's a good character in her own right.

If it isn't an adaption, they shouldn't use character names from ACD and make it out to be an adaption. Make it an original story if that is what it is.

:shrugs: I was into Arthuriana as a kid. And then comic-book superheroes. I learned a long time ago that you can have the same names for several characters, in-jokes, mythology gags, etc.; and still, honestly, be doing an entirely new story with new characters.

There's so many different adaptations of every character though that I don't see what's so sacred about them being in the with the exact particularities of the original characters. You have bamf Watson, bumbling Watson, sycophantic Watson, and so on. At this point the Watson role is basically to be a foil.
