Uh, if people realize that someone is whistling frantically for help but the sound's bouncing around, do you think they'd just shrug and go "oh well, this is a tough problem I guess I'll go home and watch Jersey Shore"? ;)

Keep in mind that the guy in question had NOBODY searching for him, because he hadn't old anyone of his hiking plans. Anything you can do that attracts attention and instigates a search is a good idea and worth doing. A search GREATLY improves your odds of being rescued and being able to narrow the search area down via locating the sound of a whistle does, too.
