Apparently debunking that story was one of the earlier things that happened when my girlfriend started law school. I find it encouraging that I've been coming across people setting the story straight more and more.

I'm a medical librarian, and a few years ago I ran into a journal article describing her injuries. I spent the next few hours randomly thinking, "Ow ow ow." Also, the temperature of the coffee was ridiculous. Of course she was heinously burned.

Yup. People act like it's a case of "lol she didn't expect the coffee to be hot?" and not one of the coffee being way the hell hotter than it needed to be.

You mean you don't serve your own coffee at temperatures that will sear flesh? I've said it before, and I'll say it again. McDonald's should thank their lucky stars every fucking night that an overweight, middle-aged woman was the one to get hurt and not some adorable blond two-year-old who knocked the coffee out of Daddy's hand. It would have been a lot harder to sell the public on the "some daffy dingbat's frivolous lawsuit" against someone's toddler in a burn unit.

Dude, out wasn't an overweight middle aged woman. It was a thin, elderly woman.
