Yaoi recs?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The mood finally struck me hard again after convincing myself for years I'd matured way beyond this. What are some of the best* yaoi anime? Or manga, if it's really good, but preferably anime? Doesn't have to be explicit but please, canon gay!

*best as in, the greatest ones you're ashamed to tell anyone you watch and outwardly profess might be terrible but still you secretly love.

FAKE! It's cheesy as heck (and a weeeee bit creepy in places) but man, I love it anyway.

na

+1. It's definitely not without its issues, but it has a special place in my heart. I also just have a weakness for gay cops (or maybe they were bi. I can't really remember)

Ai no Kusabi. The old one, I haven't seen the remake (did it ever get finished?). If you go beyond the terrible/awesome yaoi porn there's actually a relatively interesting sci-fi plot going on, considering the genre and all. but let's be honest, I never watched it for the plot.

Probably the best yaoi OAV (still) would be Ai no Kusabi.

It's kind of dated at this point, and very much has the seme/uke dynamic going on, but it was progressive for its time and has a well-developed story and world to go along with the gay drama.

I used to think Mirage of Blaze anime was really top quality because it had canon gay, but so much plot beyond that, that I don't think it even qualifies as yaoi genre. Even still, if you hold out for the whole series, you still got some very sexual scenes (not porn iirc, but more sexually charged?)

But I tried to rewatch it recently and maybe I just don't have the attention span I used to, but I got bored and a lot of it felt really disjointed and awkward. Still, it probably deserves a place somewhere on a list.

I haven't watched Mirage of Blaze in years (so it might not hold up), but I seriously dug it back in the day. I even bought the DVD's! (I still have them around here somewhere...maybe I should find them.)

It was...something else, and a lot fucked up, but the back-story was pretty intriguing.

(Not anime but) Pretty much everything by Yoneda Kou.

Oh hell yeah. She's great.

No. 6. Ending sucked, but I liked it besides that.

Yes, I forgot about this one! I think the first half, or even three quarters of the series was amazing. And I don't mean for a slash anime, but just for an anime. Then it was like all the sudden it decided it had to end in a few episodes, so went ahead and did that in an awkward and unfulfilling way.

If you haven't checked them out, a dedicated fan translated all nine of the original books. They're proper YA and not light novels, which was a pleasant surprise.

Shion's mooning also becomes extra priceless since it's mostly his POV.

I liked that one.

Manga, but I like that Viewfinder one. I think the art is the most beautiful you'll find in about any manga ever, and it covers all of my dirty shameful kinks...

Not really in on the anime front, but my favorite manga was a one-shot called Denki (or Electricity) by Naono Bohra. Very cute!

Miyamoto Kano's Rules is my go-to rec.

I don't think it fits the best* definition you've got, but What Did You Eat Yesterday? is something I've been dying to binge buy because the premise sounds right up my alley.

If you're also open to manhwa, One Thousand and One Nights. Totally One Thousand and One Nights.

Fake
Tyrant Falls in Love*
Haru wo Daiteita
Honto Yajuu
pretty much anything by Sanami Matoh, Yamamoto Kotetsuko, Fujiyama Hyouta, Suzuki Tsuta.

*I enjoy this one but it is rapey as hell.

S-So many... I'm such a closet fujo, it's not even funny. If you don't mind dub-con/non-con/everything that would make you clutch your pearls then: Ten Count, anything by Nekota Yonezou, seconding Viewfinder and the first Ai no Kusabi OVA, Honto Yajuu, I think the No. 6 manga is completely scanlated, but just to be safe read the novels... there's more, I could always copy-paste all the crappy yaoi I've read here.

Disclaimer: I don't claim to have good taste. In fact just take all my recs with a grain of salt because most of them end up being guilty pleasures.

Feel more than free to copy paste! :D I am down for pretty much all the terrible and problematic yaoi tropes. I love it all, I proudly admit (on an anonymous forum on the internet)
