I posted here a week or two back, but I can't complete Dragon Age Inquisition after 80 hours in, because the game suddenly started lagging, out of the blue, to under 10 FPS. I have a new laptop, but am not too tech savvy, so have wasted hours and hours trying to find solutions for a Nvidia graphics card that stopped running, and been in touch with my laptop's people to problem solve. They eventually had me reset my computer, which I did, but the problem still persists and now I need to figure out how to restore my system image and... ugh, this is way above my head. I just want to exchange it or something, but I can't because I bought it in a different country and the warranty is only good there, so any fixes are going to be out of my pocket. And will involve me losing my computer for however long it takes to fix, assuming it can be fixed, and I'm in school and that's just not an option.

Dragon Age is my stress relief, sort of ironic that now it's my problem.

This is terrible, anon. I had hoped you had found a workaround.

Did you at least back up your saves? Maybe it would be best to come back to the game later, once you find a solution. (If it makes you feel any better, I've given up on playing this game until there's a decent patch to fix some of the issues and/or there's new story DLC. My game runs alright but I don't want to get bored with it before it gets fixed or finished.)

Can you find something else to play in the meantime, or do NO games work? (I assume no since you said the problem is with your graphics card? Unless your graphics card just has issues with certain games, idk.)

If you could find a cheap (old) console + games that would provide you with something to do! (But of course that's an extra expense too, and might be impossible to find so I'm not sure how useful that suggestion is.)

Sorry. :/

Thanks. Well, I'm pretty sure I copied over my saves to my external hard drive when I wiped my computer, and I guess they should be on the "system image" thing when I finally figure out how to restore that, but they should be on the cloud in Origin anyway, right? Pretty sure I had cloud saves going too so as I understand, I could theoretically play on any computer if I log in to Origin, or something. Though the terrifying thought that my saves are lost has definitely occurred to me many times.

I don't really know, I probably should just find another game. It was my Nvidia graphics card that stopped working, which I guess is the one used for hardcore stuff like games, and the default graphics card is just for everyday stuff, which is probably why the game started lagging - something went wrong with the Nvidia so it was trying to play the game on my normal one? I had tried to load Dragon Age 2 to see if it was working, and it actually seemed to be running, but maybe the graphics were set to low enough that even my default graphics card was able to run it. Maybe older games aren't a problem, idk. I still am not 100% sure what the problem was, except that I know my Nvidia card is being disabled by Windows for errors that can't be solved.

Thanks though, I'll probably dig out my 3DS and do a game I haven't finished yet instead. It seriously seems like such a first world problem, lol. But I'm really attached to Dragon Age and now I'm in the middle of the story, it sucks to not be able to at least have completed it once before these errors started.

If you copied your saves I'm sure it'll be fine! And I'm not certain if cloud saves are on by default or not, but if you logged into Origin regularly then I'd say there's a good chance they've been uploaded. Don't worry about it too much! (When I switched computers I was worried my old saves wouldn't work. I had no reason to worry, but I still did. It was fine!)

Hmm, in that case if you have any older games you never finished or want to buy something cheap (maybe through steam, though I don't have experience with it; they have good sales, apparently) that would be something to do! Does steam have demos? Maybe try games that have demos so you can see if they actually work on your machine before buying.

Yea, I know how you feel. Nothing like paying $60 for a game then not getting to finish it for some confusing ass reason. I don't know if you tumblr, but considering how many spoilers are around I can understand wanting to get through quickly.

I hope you find something else you like in the meantime!

Haha, no, I don't tumblr. But I am so desperate to start looking into the fandom and geeking out about these characters and the story and all, but I can't, I just can't, I want my first playthrough to be as spoiler-free as possible. But I want to talk about it soooo badly!

Stay strong! There are a few big surprises, and I guarantee they'll be worth seeing unspoiled.

I had to abandon tumblr for about a month while playing through the game (it's a fucking long game, okay?) and it helped a lot. It was difficult not having anyone to discuss the game with, but...if you need discussion that bad you can always jump in later!

BioWare fandom is dedicated, they'll be talking about this shit for years.

It sounds like your solution here would be to get a new video card? Potentially expensive but if it's busted, that's the solution.

I don't think a system reset will do much of anything. Unless the card is working for other things? but from what your saying my impression it's not working entirely. That might be a hardware problem, which won't have a software fix. You said it's new, this thing still under warranty?

Re: Complaining thread

(Anonymous) 2015-02-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, yeah. The problem is my Nvidia graphics driver (which is the one I think the games are supposed to be using, instead of the normal Intel one) is getting a Code 43 that nothing seems to be resolving, so Windows has disabled it. Over the past week and a half I've been shooting e-mails back and forth with the Asus people, and they just seem confused. Since I reset the whole computer and the problem is still there, what little I know of computers suggests to me that maybe the hardware is broken, not the software. Googling tells me they are very difficult to replace in laptops. It's still under warranty, but unfortunately I'm living abroad for the year and the warranty is only local... but I might just have to bite the bullet and mail it overseas, but that takes a lot of time and money itself and I'm not sure would be worth it unless I know replacing the laptop is the only fix.

I'll admit I still get desktops for this very reason. Swapping's a lot easier.

Oh damn yeah, being abroad makes everything harder. But it does sound like it's the hardware, and while I'm no expert if it's code 43'ing no matter what you do maybe that's windows working RIGHT, and something's wrong with that fucker. Which means no easy fix, in your case. :( Sorry anon.

Thanks, though. To be honest, it's been such a headache, it's just a relief to finally have a good idea of what the actual problem is. I wish the Asus people could've been that direct! Even after nothing they suggested was working (updating everything, resetting, etc) they still wouldn't give me a clear idea of anything that could possibly be the problem, just told me to send it in.

I honestly would much prefer a desktop, for reasons not limited to gaming. But considering I travel and go abroad so often, it just wasn't feasible. One day I will settle down and have the fattest, heaviest, most hardcore desktop of all time and I don't care if it takes a truck to move it, it will be an improvement over all the dumb laptop problems.
