50 Shades of Analysis

I thought the author had presented some salient point until I saw the phrase "feminist document". Then I boarded the Nope Train nonstop to Fuckthatville.

Your thoughts?

My thoughts are that the AV Club has really declined a lot and this is almost certainly just a clickbaity contrarian thinkpiece that ought not be taken seriously.

That's before I read the piece, of course.

OP

I actually haven't read AV Club stuff all that much in recent months, and I only found this after clicking on a piece discussing John Stewart's departure. The author's points about crappy books being adapted into halfway tolerable movies due to a focus on dialogue was worthwhile (at least for me), which is why I kept reading. That ending, though....

Sort of related, but it's hilarious how the misogynists on 4chan utterly despise this book. "She'd rather get tortured than take my virginity?! Fucking women!"

It's a poor interpretation of BDSM and with the "this is a Twilight fanfiction" markers all over it.

That's not really why they hate it. That might be their justification, but the reason they hate it is that it's popular and well-known and its fan base is primarily women. Pretty much anything with that description is going to be hated by most of 4chan.

True, but I believe the depths of /r9k/ hate it because they can't get laid. That's their entire schtick, a million issues with women's desires and how it keeps them virgins.

Well, yes, but /r9k/ is terrible even by 4chan's standards.

That made me chuckle, I'll give it that.

I'm seeing it on V-Day.

In preparation, I bought the largest flask I can hide in a jacket easily. I ain't doing this sober, no way no how.

Haha, I'm going to see it too! I hope it is entertaining, if nothing else.

The claim about it being awesome just because it has a female director and screen writer, and how it will be "classy sexy" instead of (gasp!) showing too much sex seemed incredibly cliche, and like the writer had no idea what he was talking about.
